Eye special: how to protect them from the dangers of summer

Tired and red eyes? These can be troublesome inconveniences, especially in summer, when exposure to the sun is higher during days at the beach, in the pool, or in the mountains.

In fact, alongside its numerous benefits for our body, the sun, if not ‘approached’ correctly, can have negative effects on our health. The correlation between UV exposure and short- and long-term eye conditions is well established; for this reason, it is essential to understand the risks our eyes face in summer and know how to protect them.

Although the eye is a very delicate organ, it has natural protection systems that, under normal physiological conditions, shield it from external agents or excessive sunlight. However, during prolonged exposure to sunlight, these mechanisms are insufficient to protect the eye from potential damage or disorders such as:

  • Conjunctivitis
  • Stye or blepharitis
  • Dry eye syndrome: Caused by the high temperatures typical of summer, which cause the watery component of the tear film to evaporate, resulting in irritation, redness, a foreign body sensation, itching, and photophobia.
  • Punctate keratitis: Among the short-term risks, this is a very painful condition due to corneal dehydration, often occurring after exposure to intense light.

When at the beach or during prolonged exposure to sunlight, it is crucial to adopt some measures that can be an effective defense against UV rays, preventing damage to our eyes:

  • Always wear sunglasses, essential for shielding the eyes from UV rays
  • For added protection, combine sunglasses with a hat or visor
  • Avoid rubbing your eyes with your hands or a beach towel
  • Reduce the use of contact lenses or stick to daily lenses
  • Wash and rinse your eyes several times a day; when regular cleaning with soap and water is not possible, the use of Eyegiene® is recommended.

Eyegiene® is a sterile, soft, and delicate wipe for the daily cleansing of the ocular surface, eyelids, and periocular area. Thanks to its components, Eyegiene® provides a cleansing and decongestant action, offering immediate and lasting relief while reducing tearing, redness, dryness, and hypersensitivity caused by environmental factors such as sun and wind, or contact with sand, chlorine, and sunscreen.

It can be used by both adults and children.

Eyegiene® is also recommended for the treatment of conjunctivitis, styes, and blepharitis and is available for purchase online on our website.
